UPTON RETIRED MENS CLUB CELEBRATE THEIR GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY

Do you remember when petrol was 35p a gallon (8p litre)? When a pint of beer cost 18p and milk was 5p a bottle? And you could buy a brand-new Ford Cortina for about £1000?

The men in the Upton Retired Mens Club (URMC) do! In October 2022 they celebrated 50 years since the first meeting took place in the United Reformed Church on Heath Road in Upton in 1972. The Club continues to meet there every Monday morning to discuss the issues of the day (excluding politics or religion, of course) or to listen to a talk by a member or an invited guest speaker.

The President for 2022, Alan Murphy, said “The Club is a great place to start your week in a positive way. We begin with a cuppa and a chat and then move on to the morning’s theme. After about an hour and a half or so, we leave refreshed and, usually, with some added information about a topical or interesting issue. Everyone is encouraged to contribute their thoughts and opinions or ask questions of the speaker”. He explained that a new President is selected each year and that members take it in turns to make the cup of coffee or tea each week. The Chairman for the day then gives a talk or introduces the guest speaker.

The President arranges for one or two excursions or visits in the region and organises the Annual Lunch and the Christmas Carols and Cakes meeting at the Church.
